1998 : Bollywood Boxoffice Report Card (As per Komal Nahta)

This was a year of upsets. The films that were expected to do wonderfully didn’t, and some of those that made it to the grade of ‘overflow’ or nearabouts are competing with the likes of Ghulam and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan…

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, is the super-duper hit of the year. And Bandhan, which we again dubbed a loser, was a semi-hit. And despite the hype about movies like Satya it just figures as an average hit (thought it is a superhit in the Bombay and Central Provinces theatrical circuits), far beneath such dubious films as Maut and the dubbed Miyan Bivi aur Woh. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was the undoubted hit of the year, being classified a super-duper hit. Trailing by a long distance were films like Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya and Soldier. And in the semi-hit category is the aforementioned Bandhan and Dulhe Raja. All in all, the mushy films scored over the others. Among the big failures were Duplicate, Jeans, China-Gate, Jhoot Bole Kauva Kaate, Banarasi Babu, Zor, Saat Rang Ke Sapne, Kareeb, Dil Se, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, Kudrat, Zakhm and Wajood. Among the stars, Salman Khan was declared the most successful by industry pundits, followed by Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Bobby Deol and Ajay Devgan. Don’t forget to check out the details tomorrow!

  1. Yakuza any prediction on the opening of Raavan yet or its too early as big pctures are planning it on the same track as kites?

    • chengez, its better to guess a week before release, Let’s Raajneeti come first at boxoffice.

  2. Yakuza please give collection reports for HF, Kites and BC

  3. you are doing a wonderful job by bringing out the facts about the performance of yesteryear’s movies. This will clear many misconceptions of fans of the so called king srk. The most prominent of them is calling kkhh a blockbuster. Thank you for the great job. do keep it up.

  4. yakuza i have been hearing some rave responses for ab jr on the net for ravan from those who seen the trial show.can u update anything on that?

  5. the count down starts already….18 days to go for the festival called Raavan to begin!!

  6. yakuza why are u not updating kites , HF and BC this weekends collections. its been asked by so many people but u are ignoring it totaly and answering other questions though. Why ?

    • No Katrina, i was not ignoring. Its better to do the job rather than replyng. Well i published the report .. 🙂

  7. Definitely one of Salman Khan best years in Bollywood. Wasn’t Bandhan a Hit-Super-Hit in the interiors, especially Bihar and Rajasthan?

  8. well i dont have the link but i got the news on yahoo site

  9. yakuza do u agree with nahata’s strict verdicts? i mean he called KKK semihit which shud be hit to superhit in BOI and your standard.

  10. thankx Yakuza. as a Salman fan i thought JPKSHH was a failure so am glad to know da truth. well it seems like Salman had a good 90’s.

  11. farzi report card….
jab pyar kisise hota hai & bade miya chhote miya & ghulam were strong hits….
    that is for sure……..

    • Arun, again same reply. this report is as it is picked from film-information magazine, there might be some movies missed, but it never means that i forget. Also need to add, Komal classification is touted to be most authentic and strict and followed by all media in pre millennium, its just revolution of some new online sites that are making more convenient classifications to suit the taste of public, komal just forgotten in this mob. But again, gem is gem. Its not that i always agree with his verdict and numbers, he is also human and can do mistake, but his journal entry is most authentic and for any mistake printed even in his magazine, he rectify it lately.

  12. i know yakuza bro.that this wasnt belongs to u.but yeh farzi reports mat laya karo yaar dhoondh ke.yahan komal nahta ya film-information magzine ki nahin tumhari credibilty ka sawal hai. apne own figures laya karo yar.we r here for u.not for farzi peoples like nahtas.
