Boxoffice Operation : Shahenshah (1988)

Shahenshah is a 1988 Bollywood superhero film directed by Tinnu Anand and starring Amitabh Bachchan in the title role. The film was produced and directed by Tinnu Anand. The story of the film was written by Amitabh Bachchan’s wife Jaya Bachchan and the screenplay was written by veteran screenwriter Inder Raj Anand who died before the film was released. The film marked Bachchan’s comeback after a three year hiatus during which he had entered politics. Due to the hype of Amitabh Bachchan’s comeback Shahenshah went onto do well at the box office.

Name Shahenshah
Opening 100%, Shattered all previous records of opening weeks.
WOM Good
Trending Good only,  considering trending of movies at that time was as stable as can stretch up to 15-20 weeks easily. But after 1982 movies starts releasing on all India basis and trending of movies starts decreasing. Shahenshah has excellent run for almost 10 weeks and then stable at 8-12Lakh per week range for almost 10 Months. Can’t be termed as great,  Just OK considering biggest movie of 1988.
ROI Budget was 1.5 Crore. DP of Shahenshah was quite high  of around 3 Crore which was almost double of previous bachchan movie Mard in 1985. DS from domestic theatrical run was around 5.6 Crore. Overall it was good earning proposition for distributors.  But expectations was little more.
Distribution Right 3 Crore (85 Lakhs for mumbai, 60 Lakhs for Delhi/up)
Recovery 5.6 Crore Domestic Distribution Share (1.5 Crore share was from Mumbai alone)
Relative performance Very good Compared to other hits like Tezaab, Paap ki Duniya and Qyamat se qayamat tak.
Recall value Good, Always Remember for iconic performance of amitabh as Super Hero.
BollyBusiness Note Opening was extraordinary, Sustain at very high level for around 8-9 weeks, later settle on lower side for around 1 year. Good earner for distributors. Only Movie of 1988 which go past 1.5 Crore distribution share for Bombay circuit. But expectations from movie was sky high. In that terms it really under performed.
Verdict Good Hit

* Revenues from other sources are not known.

  1. I really enjoy these Boxoffice Operation, please do more of these segments.

I would like to see movies like:
    – Ek Duje Ke Liye
    – Mashaal
    – Trishul
    – Amar Akbar Anthony
    – Hum (1991)
    – Biwi No.1
    – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

    • Sure randy, i will try some of these, At least Biwi No 1, HDDCS, Hum are possible.

      • Yakuza, why doesnt your company start a professional site and have verdicts and BO performance of all movies. BOI is too SRK-pro and inconsistent for SRK movies and IBOS not really respected due to it’s political statements.

        • jeevcy, Site is under process. Will be live shortly.

        • jeevcy, Since my childhood i am playing with box-office numbers, Once we owned single screen cinema, which shutdown in 2005.Was running between 1979-2005. I have all the financials for most of movies since 1979. Again my job gives me opportunity to play all the time with box-office numbers. I have worked with one box-office site in past. I part ways due to disagreement on many fronts. This blog is just out of my passion to business of cinema. I am more business analyst than movie analyst. I always put here the data which to my utter believe is true. verdicts are definite subjective thing. But numbers should be fair. My sources at the moment is less than BOI, but fairness is definite more and i love to share my experience and collections of box-office numbers for old movies.

  2. yakuza waiting for proffesional site.i m a big movie buff.have u heard abt BOI scam which got onto surface recently at indiafm by bigfun.10-12 SRK MOVIES verdict were raised with time. Also verdicts for akki, aamir movies were dropped. Also, what is real verdict for KKHH,i know it flopped in bihar circuit.what’s ur take and comments

  3. also want to know whi is boi so pro srk.what is the reason for it?

  4. Yakuza

thank you for this gr8 site.

Shahenshah was a brilliant movie. loved AB in this movie. song called ‘jaane do mujhe jaana hai’ was r.popular in those days 😉

  5. YAKUZA ….YOU TALKED IN YOUR PREVIOUS ARTICLE ABOUT VERDICTS BEING SUBJECTIVE…SO DONT U THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE A CERTAIN CONSISTENCY WHILE GIVING VERDICT’S ON MOVIES…THERE ARE DIFFERENT SITES GIVING DIFFERENT VERDICT’S FOR THE SAME MOVIE…IT GET’S CONFUSING EVEN THOUGH THE BOX-OFFICE NO’S ARE PRETTY SIMILAR ACROSS ALL SITES…AND WHY CAN’T BOLLYWOOD HAVE A STANDARD BOX-OFFICE SITE ON THE LINE’S OF MOJO FOR HOLLYWOOD…>

  6. CAUSE EVEN WITH MNIK IT IS NOT ABT BOX-OFFICE COLLECTIONS ….CAUSE THE REPORTED NO’S ARE PRETTY SIMILAR ACROSS ALL SITES WTH MINIMAL DIFFERENCES…BUT THERE ARE VARIATIONS WHEN IT COMES TO GIVING VERDICTS…THOUGH I RESPECT THE KNOWLEDGE OF EVERY B.O SITE ,BUT THESE VARIATIONS IN VERDICT’S MAKES EVERYTHING BLURRR…CAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY IT IS THE VERDICT THT DECIDES A ACTORS STANDING IN THE INDUSTRY….>HOPE YAKUZA YOU WILL HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ABT THIS…>

    • Yup, this is very unfortunate that Indian box-office still don’t have any consistent methodology to yield verdicts. Everyone has their own dynamic model. Don’t worry, very soon verdict system will be closed and only numbers will speak.

  7. Yakuza I really like your box office collections and verdicts. plz let me know what about atithi….
I am also running a site and i need your support because you are senior to me. My site name is http://www.bollyplus.com
plz visit and tel us know that what we have to do for improvement?

    • Good site bro, Just keep updating on regular basis, You can take content from my site for any article you like, with reference ofcourse. Good Luck.

  8. Rishte main to hum tumhare baap lagte hain , naam hai ShahanShah

  9. Dear Yakuza,
First of all thanks to you to fulfill my request, actually I requested to u several times for this and what about the video of Shahenshah, that said I will bring and proof of film Shahenshah, that how much big.
Yakuza,Why this is not Superhit,DS is 3 crore and earned above 7 crore, which is superb.nowadys if a film will do more than a half, the film will consider Blockbuster film, then why with Shahenshah that in 1988 shahenshah did over 7 crore and still just HIT,please Yakuza, explain this one,if we will do through ROI then Shahenshah is coming Superhit? Please give me answer?please……………………………………

    • Shakir
In 1980s Films which made very huge profits were considered succeses.
Just see – Amitabh’s Toofan,Ganga Jamuna Saraswati,Inquilaab and Desh Premee were profitable ventures (if compared equal to today’s Wake Up Sid or Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge) but still were considered flops.
Today any film which does profit (even smaller margin) are considered succeses.

  10. Thanks Yakuza,
Great to read this analysis, fair and thorough — keep it up!

  11. Dear YAKUZA,
you forgot the adjusted collection of film SHAHENSHAH,please tell me how much is coming if we ll adjust.please answer.

    • I didn’t forget, I never use this adjustment calculation in BO operations. Still adjusted value of 7 Crore in 1988 now is approx. 84 Crore.

  12. thanks dear yakuza.

  13. […] Check Full Analysis HERE […]

  14. can anybody help me to get or find a shahenshah script please. would be very helpful.

  15. There might be an never-ending debate on how perhaps the Movie business has changed in the last 30 odd years. Actors are doing increasingly lesser movies(though this trend started in the 2000′s only),increase in other mediums of entertainment, and so on.

On the other hand there have been booms too for the industry with Music(in 90′s) , Sattellite/Cable(2000′s) providing a very good avenue for Movie Revenue thus helping a lot in the movie’s recovery.

Also can be said that modes of promotions has also increased by leaps and bounds.

But leaving the above behind, and going movie to movie, Amitabh Bachchan hit an extreme purple patch for almost 15-16 years between 1973-88.

The Innings is interesting for the amount of movies done and the success rate achieved.

Infact of the 63 movies Bachchan did in that period only 7 movies faced monetary losses of any kinds, thus a loss making movie used to an Event for Amitabh Bachchan.

Also, Amitabh Bachchan had atleast 1 hit a year for 14 straight years(1973-86).

Take a look. * Verdicts Based on Film Information Trade Journal, probably the most strict system of Verdict out there.

For Fairness purpose its important to highlight the not so successfull periods of Bachchan’s Career.

    1969-72

This Period is the start of the Career of Big B, he mostly struggled around for few years before breaking big time in Zanjeer. The notable movies of this time are Saat Hindustani, Anand and Bombay to Goa.

    1 Saat Hindustani 1969 – Flop
    2 Anand 1970 – AA
    3 Reshma Aur Shera 1971 – Flop
    4 Pyar Ki Kahani 1971 – Flop
    5 Parwana 1971 – Flop
    6 Bombay To Goa 1971 – BB
    7 Bansi Birju 1972 – Flop
    8 Ek Nazar 1972 – Flop
    9 Sanjog 1972 – Flop
    10 Raaste Ka Pathar 1972 – Flop

    1989-92

This Period Signifies the return of Big B from the political Arena back to movie business, again here he didnt find the same success as he did in this prime. Notable movies are Agneepath,Hum and Aaj Ka Arjun.

    1 Toofan 1989 – B
    2 Jaadugar 1989 – Flop
    3 Main Azaad Hoon 1989 – Flop
    4 Agneepath 1990 – B
    5 Aaj Ka Arjun 1990 7,00,00,000 AA*
    6 Hum 1991 8,00,00,000 AA*
    7 Ajooba 1991 – Flop
    8 Indrajeet 1991 – Flop
    9 Akayla 1991 – Flop
    10 Khuda Gawah 1992 – B
    11 Insaaniyat 1994 – B
Since 1997 Amitabh Bachchan has starred and been successfull in uncountable number of movies, though most have been in character role capacity thus cant be counted(in this context that is), though he has again had Pivotal roles in movies like Paa,Black,Cheeni Kum and Khakee but such movies wont be 10% of his movies since 2000 and definitely dont echo back at the glorious run of 1973-88.
