Praz Gold : MY NAME IS KHAN (Hindi, 2010)
Those that know me well will know that I’m no advocate for Shahrukh Khan, I’ve found the latter part of his career lagging in many ways. Nor am I a huge fan of Karan Johar’s brand of cinema which comes off more artificial than not. Heck I prefer his productions like KAL HO NA HO and DOSTANA to his own directorial venture. Given the joke that KURBAAN was, my expectations for MY NAME IS KHAN was fairly low, however the film springs a surprise! Yes the film has some glaring flaws, however it doesn’t ruin the overall experience.
On paper the film sounded like a FORREST GUMP-esque feel good film about a simple man, and the film works in that regard. Johar’s pitch here is different and for once he successfully merges the backdrop of the city in to the films proceedings. The film has a noble intention, and unlike trying to delve heavy in to the terrorist sub-plots and it’s implications like NEW YORK or the horrendous KURBAAN, MY NAME IS KHAN is firstly and fore-mostly a human film before anything else.
