PRAZ GOLD : SARKAR (Hindi, 2005)

Will be watching SARKAR RAJ either tonight or tomorrow night and do my first review…

Ram Gopal Varma is no doubt a name that raises a lot of debate, whether you hate him or love him; you simply cannot deny the nonconformist film-makers innovative and creative film-making which questions and defies stereotypes. When RGV produces a movie one expects new talents exploding their way onscreen as well as the introduction of some supremely talented directors and actors with films like SHOOL, AB TAK CHAPPAN, EK HASINA THI THI and MY WIFES MURDER, however when Varma decides to sit on the directors chair himself, it’s a different kettle of fish all together. SARKAR came with the biggest of hype, and was Varmas most ambitious project in his entire career at the time it released. It paired Varma with his all time “hero” Amitabh Bachchan as well as featuring the next generation of Bachchan, Abhishek. The promos oozed style and quality and this promised to be yet another depiction of power play and politics after SATYA and COMPANY and marked a trilogy of sorts for Varma. The movie when released met with diverse reactions from critics, though it struck gold at the box-office, and in brutal honesty, given the hype and expectations from SARKAR it did fall short of expectations, however this didn’t stop it from being one very entertaining film, and one that marked a number of “events” in Hindi cinema at that time including, notably the rise of the Prince..Abhishek Bachchan who delivered a tour-de-force performance.
