Bulk Advance Booking Record Holders

There was time when movie shows were booked for weeks in advance, it was story pre introduction of multiplexes. However even in 90’s, advance booking was rare occasion. Hum Apke Hain Kaun, Raja Hindustani and Dil Wale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge are some cool examples. Let’s look at some record holder of advance bookings post millennium at Delhi.

1. Gadar(2001) : For 10 consecutive weeks, whole weekend was booked in advance at many cinemas across Delhi, Liberty and Sapna cinema in Delhi was delighted to screen this mega epic for 36 and 42 weeks respectively. Era of Houseful Advance booking for whole weekend for many consecutive weeks ends with Gadar.

2. Om Shanti Om(2007) : This was time of multiplex Era and Hype of Om Shanti Om releasing on Diwali was at its peak, Around 1000 prints were in circulation and multiplexes were cheering with the fact that whole weekend get booked for many multiplexes, for eg. bulk corporate bookings at satyam cineplex for entire Diwali weekend, in fact 95% occupancy at multiplexes was through advance bookings. Big Tree Entertainment company  which keep track of these ticket booking systems and sell tickets, sold maximum tickets for Om Shanti Om. However the euphoria of advance was for first two weeks only, but it opens eye for many market players.

3. Welcome (2007) : Welcome follows Om shanti Om path for first weekend, bookings were huge, however below Om Shanti Om. Still market investors have a sigh of relief by investing money in brooking tickets as it was consecutive 2nd profitable venture which falls just short of former one.

4. Singh Is King(2008) : After Welcome in 2007, whole bookers were waiting for next big venture but this time their wait went long till “Singh is king” arrive on august 2008, it was over 10 months since they were surviving with minimal output. Singh is king again brought up the euphoria, it storm the entire nation on first weekend with highest advance booking after release of  welcome, however again falls short of Om Shanti Om, “Singh is King” induces new life to these players.

5. Ghajini (2008): It was storm never seen before, however first weekend was on par with “Om Shanti Om” if you look into advance bookings online, but overall bookings for subsequent weeks was way above OSO, Roughly 75 lacs was earned as commission by selling Ghajini tickets against 40 lacs of Om Shanti Om.

Sadly story ends with Ghajini, since December 2008 advance bookings are all time low, even advance bookings for Golmal returns during last Diwali was way below the mark. Rab ne bana di jodi was also below the mark for advances. Kambakht Ishq, Kaminey, Love Aaj kal were good but not excellent. Now all eyes are on Three Idiots which is all set for 25th December, and investors are hoping to full their pockets with this one. Let’s hope for best.
