My earlier piece on KAADHAL (Tamil, 2004)

It s been a while since I saw a great Tamil film, or for that matter a great love story and KADHAL thankfully fills both those voids. Given the movie was the first production of whiz-kid director Shankar (HINDUSTANI, ANNIYAN) and directed by Balaji Shaktivel (SAMURAI) I expected somewhat of a racy, commercial masala movie. What I got was a poignant, heart-breaking and extremely raw love story about first love.

On paper the movie sounds like the oldest clich associated with Indian cinema-rich girl meets poor boy and they elope, however it wouldn t be a far stretch to say that the movie offers a new twist to one of the oldest clichs.
